Connected Warriors Yoga for Veterans

Connected Warriors Yoga for Veterans is a specialized yoga and mindfulness program developed specifically for Veterans including those suffering from PTSD, traumatic brain injury, combat stress, depression and physical disability. All yoga instructors in the Karma Yoga Outreach program have completed advanced therapeutic yoga training to become certified and credentialed in Connected Warriors. We currently provide four classes per week at different locations in the community to Veterans and their immediate family members free of charge. All equipment, mats, belts, blocks, blankets etc. are provided for them at the location, so Veterans and their loved ones can just show up to participate. Yoga for Children with Special Needs

Our program of Yoga for Children with Special Needs began in the fall of 2014 at Ave Maria Preparatory School, in Myakka City, Florida, a school for students with learning and emotional impairments, autism spectrum and other mental developmental disabilities. Now in our second school year we currently teach 65 children ages 6 through 22, the entire enrollment at the school, from first grade through high school. The Karma Yoga Outreach instructors have advanced training and credentials in teaching therapeutic yoga for children with special needs. This certification, Every Kids Yoga, is specifically designed to integrate the practice of yoga to parallel and support other therapeutic modalities in addressing difficulties with attention, self regulation, speech and language, learning and high and low muscle tone. The certification is geared specifically towards children with diagnosis’ that include High Functioning Autism/ Asperger’s Syndrome, Sensory Processing Dysfunction, Learning Disabled and ADHD. The program has been so successful that the school’s administration has made yoga the first period of each school morning – so that each child gets yoga at least weekly. Learn more >>

Yoga for Parkinson’s

Karma Yoga Outreach provides two Yoga programs specifically for Parkinson’s students in partnership with Neurochallenge Parkinson’s Foundation: Yoga for Parkinson’s, a therapeutic yoga class, at North Port Yoga Center and Let Your Yoga Dance for Parkinson’s, a yoga-dance fusion taught at Sarasota Ballet studios in Sarasota. Our Yoga for Parkinson’s program at North Port Yoga Center is in its second year. Let Your Yoga Dance for Parkinson’s began this year. In both cases Neurochallenge refers students to us. While Yoga cannot cure this degenerative nerve disease it can slow its progression. Our Yoga for Parkinson’s classes address the symptoms of Parkinson’s both physical and non-motor. Yoga for Parkinson’s improves balance, strength, flexibility, range of motion, posture, gait, mobility, lower extremity function, and reduces the fear of falling and the rate of loss of strength and flexibility while improving one’s overall sense of well-being. This specialized Yoga actually improves the quality of life for Parkinson’s students. Learn more >>

Y12SR – The Yoga of 12 Step Recovery

Karma Yoga Outreach provides a Y12SR session once per week free of charge which is open to anyone dealing with their own addictive behaviors, recovering from addiction or affected by those behaviors in others. Thus not only addicts but all “A’s” are welcome, those loved ones or relatives who might qualify for Al-Anon. Modeled from the meetings of 12-step programs, Y12SR is a group sharing circle coupled with an intentional, themed trauma-informed yoga practice. All Karma Yoga Outreach instructors conducting these classes are certified and credentialed in Y12SR a program of the Give Back Yoga Foundation. The 12-step recovery model is highly respected with millions of practitioners around the world. Its approach to addiction is cognitive, while yoga includes a somatic approach. This combination creates a model that addresses addiction as the physical, mental and spiritual disease that it is. A Y12SR theme is “the issues live in the tissues” thereby introducing yoga philosophy and practice as an integral part of a sustainable relapse prevention program. The Karma Yoga Outreach Y12SR Program began in late January of 2016 and already has 23 registrants. The program is free to all participants. Learn more >>
